Patricia, how do you find common ground with people not like you? Do you regularly interact with people who make 10x your income or 1/10th your income?

Humans tend to gather around people who are like themselves. Which is why Zack's post is relevant. The church is homogeneous. We have white churches and black churches and rich churches and poor churches and any other kind of church in between. These churches don't blend either. I am a white, well educated, wealthy person and honestly my church is a white, well educated, wealthy church.

I think it's the actual differences that make it difficult to cross boundaries and the burden should be carried by both sides. To break homogeneity the poor should be responsible for the rich and the rich responsible for the poor, otherwise we are not equal. I see neither happening.

Patrick -

Your analysis is just out of touch with reality. But this is a very old problem. We in the middle class have always been completely blind to what's going with our neighbors just a few miles away, or even just a few doors down.

There just aren't enough jobs for everyone. That's a fact. And if you fall into a category such as refugee who doesn't speak enlgish, or, say, ex-convict who served his time, then you are going to be one of the people who can't get a job.

We have helped a lot of people find jobs. Our help has made a difference in those cases. But we're just making it so that someone else, who doesn't have a middle class advocate, can't get that job.

In this case, though, there's just no way this woman is going to get hired anywhere.

And anyways, why do we want widows like this to go out and work, leaving their kids at an expensive day care center with people who won't love them as much as their mom? That's just crazy.

As far as charities that simply provide support -- there are some, but not enough. And I actually don't know of any that will just support someone flat out.

My simple issue is with your strike against Bill Clinton's limiting of Welfare? A few years, I would assume, is enough time for someone whose quite diligent to obtain some type of income. Secondly, it's not as though private ran charities don't already exist. I'd find it hard to believe that some form of charity wouldn't be willing to give her a bit of income to afford the necessities. I myself would give some money, but I'm only a student and my bank account is currently resting on less than fifty dollars due to the fact that I'm not actively employed (by choice).

I must agree on the prior statement about the isolation of the Christian populace away from others. While it would be false to say that this is the majority, there are a good number of congregations that seem perfectly fine with being isolated, inactive societies. Being a Christian myself, I find this near repulsive.

Again, I can't do much in terms of financial assistance due to my own lack of income. My location also doesn't allow me to directly assist her. The only way I could think of helping is through communication, pen pal sort of ordeal (something I'm currently engaged in with another individual). That's about all I can offer.

It bears repeating that there was considerable anger and hatred in the previous decade. There were public assassination fantasies about the president, and the clueless, unprincipled "Jesuslander" bushie was the enemy de jour. Few hands were wrung over that equally hateful and dangerous climate. Rightly so, because the state has the biggest purse and sword on the block, and needs pity about as much as a jungle cat.

Those who fancy this new breed of social gospel is a winning evangelical strategy are kidding themselves. The Catholic blend, "Liberation Theology", has driven Latin Americans into the evangelical camp faster than any clerical scandal could. Nowhere else is the Catholic flock shrinking faster. A similar situation may be observed with the "mainline churches" in the United States.

Wow, I already would have been creeped out with those Glenn Beck clips just by themselves. With the Joker concept added on top of that... *shudder*.

Anyways this reminds me of the guy that's been outdoing Glenn Beck since before Glenn Beck started: Alex Jones. He took the Joker thing to the extreme. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnIWSI2tkDM

Adam: Do you truly think that having been trained as an engineer (4-6 yrs of college classes), and having more cash, designates your relationships with others (who haven't those two things) to be teacher/student? Those two things do not make you wiser or deeper, a better parent or friend, or obtain you a stronger spiritual relationship with God. In fact, a case can be made that those two things can make it more difficult to have the latter qualities. There are some things that others don't know because of these two things. There is money that you can give that others can't. Maybe, just maybe, if your education was excellent, you can offer them ways to think that will be helpful. Otherwise, I am supposing it is because you don't listen to what these others have to offer that you think it is largely a teacher/student affair. Not always, everywhere, but generally.

This is something that I'm wrestling with. The hardest part is figuring out how I, an engineer and pretty well off, find common ground with someone who is not well off and hasn't finished a high school education? And this isn't a hypothetical question. I do interact with these people, but the relationship is that I'm the teacher and they're the student.

I think part of the secret is discovering how the upper class NEEDS the lower class. Not only do the outcasts and the poor have something to offer but it's something of necessity. It will probably be very humbling for the church.

Politics aside I'm jumping in on just the auditory comparison Good comparison, though I think you could have shortened the Hammer Wallis commentary by Beck just a tad.. 40 seconds comparison to over a minute loses the " feel" of it for me. Nice matching though..
