Baratunde Thurston at Yearly Kos 2 August, 2007

At Yearly Kos. Whole bunch of entertainers and serious people introducing Howard Dean.
Baratunde Thurston was just up. He was really good, comedian with a lot of race jokes about how annoying/offending/infuriating white people are for any typical black person trying to get through any typical day at a white-dominated conference (like the Yearly Kos).
Isn’t it crazy interesting and strange that he can raise that stuff up on a stage and everyone laughs (people really loved it) — but that if he brought any of it up in regular conversation with probably any typical group of attendees here, they’d be in tears, or freaking out angry.
The power of laughter I suppose.

Huh? You think that Kossacks have no interaction with black people? You think that people who proudly identify themselves as liberal are going to get angry at someone who says it’s harder for minorities to interact with majority culture?
What exactly are you smoking, and why didn’t you buy some better stuff?
Whatevs, MikeJ. Why so angry? You’re making Zack’s point for him.
MikeJ, I didn\’t single out Kossacks, I was talking about us (me anyways) white liberals in general.
I think that if Thurston had said some of those things in one of the conference panels on race instead of in a comedy routine, there would have been some angry objections from some people. That\’s all. Just interesting.
